EPA Requirements for Renovation, Repair & Painting

Common renovation activities can create hazardous situations by disturbing lead-based paint.

To protect against the associated risks, the EPA issued a rule requiring the use of prescribed lead-safe work practices and strict recordkeeping procedures aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the rule, beginning in April 2010, firms must be certified and must have one or more Certified Renovators assigned to jobs that disturb lead based paint in pre 1978 housing and child occupied facilities. Under the new regulations, the EPA is authorized to impose fines for non-compliance of up to $37,500 per violation per day.
